Guru Aric and I were discussing the fact that many of the people who tend to gravitate toward American KunTao Silat are health professionals, of quite a wide spectrum of practice.

We were wondering why?   Huh

If any of you who are in the health field wouldn't mind weighing in on this topic at least two of us would find it enlightening.   Shocked

Thanks in advance,

I think it is beneficial in martial arts to understand the the body and how it works. For example, some people offer "the secret to 1-touch knock-outs". There's no secret, some points on the body when struck or tapped even lightly, can cause qi to descend quickly. When the qi rapidly leaves the head/brain area, the person falls down. This is medical knowledge, not just martial arts teaching. Traditionally, students trained hard which resulted in  injuries. They looked to their martial arts teachers for medical solutions. The same knowledge used for the combat aspect of the arts is still used to heal the body. In modern times, if students are hurt they can't make it to training. This results in a loss of income for teachers. It's in everyone's best interest for teachers to help their students recover from illness and injuries asap. AKTS is a high level system with a lot to offer. I have met the nicest people through this group.  I have sports injury medical supplies available on my website (products page) if anyone is interested. www.healingartsandwellnesscenter.com

Mary is one of many health professionals who have gravitated to American KunTao Silat for reasons only they can explain.

Mary met Sigung Steve and Uncle Bill at the very first KunTao Silat Seminar in Florida back in 1995 or so.  Maybe 1994.  She, as many, have been observing the evolution of the system over decades.  Having met with the Source, Uncle Bill; and the Founder, Sigung Steve, she has a perspective that most do not enjoy.  These two powerful martial icons have effectively changed the face of martial arts in the world.

The open, free will aspect of Sigung Steve's teachings invite contributions from those who have spent years and money seeking the truth of our physical universe and how to most effectively interface with it.

Mary is only one of many health practitioners who have embraced American KunTao Silat.  I'm sure, each for their own reasons.  But while we are on the topic of Mary, she is an acupuncturist, skilled in Chinese Medicine, a homeopathic professional and however strange it may seem, an equine doctor.  Any of you who are experiencing the effects of the debilitating modern American life style should contact her directly for some real solutions to the problems that confront you.

There are others out there that I am aware of, and I hope that they too will chime in.

Peace,
Art

I myself have been in the law enforcment field for a while, but have studied eastern medical science along with years of martial arts that focus on internal chi development, bone marrow and tendon changing, and accu-points. With AKTS being of Shaolin descent, these studies just naturally flow with the AKTS training.

While on the topic of Travis and health practice: there was some discussion on another thread somewhere, I don't recall exactly, about jow and how it aids in the training for hitting and blocking.  Some of the ancient Chinese herbalist have passed down, through generations, that little known information.  They hold that information very guardedly.

Travis has a "secret" recipe from whence he makes a great jow specifically for that purpose.  Check out the new Iron body thread at http://americankuntaosilat.org/Chat/index.php?topic=131.0 for more information.

I'm not sure of the time frame, but it will be available on line soon.  Grin

Peace,
Art
